Seit kurzem gibt es mit <a href="http://blackwingpages.wordpress.com/">"The Blackwing Pages"</a> ein auf den Blackwing 602 spezialisiertes Weblog. Dahinter steckt der kundige Kopf, der auch für <a href="http://pencilsandmusic.wordpress.com/">"Pencils and Music"</a> verantwortlich zeichnet – man darf also gespannt sein!

Robert M., thank you for your comment, your kind words and for sharing your thoughts. Of course it's never too late!

I don't know what a reborn Blackwing will trigger. Of course many will test it, also those who are great fans of the original one, but I doubt that there will be spontaneous purchases of larger quantities before a recognized expert has published a positive review.

Re stockpiling: Since I don't know the purchasing habits of other pencil collectors I can only speak for myself. I have never thought of stockpiling a certain brand or type – until I have heard about the discontinuation of the Pentel Black Polymer 999 which got me buying of several dozens. However, the unique lead in these pencils were the decisive factor.

To be honest, I haven't written very much with the Blackwing because I only have one. But if I'll do that I'll share my experience.

I guess I am a little late, but thank you for a great post.
It is really too bad that the Blackwing is so rare these days.

I wonder if the lesson of the Blackwing will inspire buyers anticipating some kind of resurrection or reincarnation of it to buy large quantities "just in case", assuming the pencil is able to live up to the legacy of the original. In fact, I wonder how many people are buying up Hi-Unis and Mono 100s for the long-term. I've considered having a stockpile myself of favorite pencils myself, but I usually give up on the idea because I can't decide which to stockpile.

One thing I've not seen much of is actual writing with a Blackwing. I have no memory of how it wrote or how broad the line was. I would expect it, as a 4B, would be more suited to large script, and would not be great for those of us who write rather small. Too bad there's no Blackwing HB out there. Then again, at HB or F, I'm not sure I'd want to sacrifice blackness for smoothness.

Adair, thank you for sharing your precise and subtle thoughts – they sound reasonable and plausible.

I didn't mean to appear overcritical. I have no doubt that CalCedar will put all their knowledge into that new pencil and produce an excellent one, and it would be a pity if a well-engineered, high-quality pencil wouldn't succeed.

I hope that the new Blackwing will take the market on winged feet ;-) and I also am looking forward to trying it.

Stephen, your naming suggestion is great ;-)

Sanford <a href="http://www.pencilrevolution.com/2005/08/blackwing-602-at-ninth-wave-designs/">schreibt:</a> "Unfortunately, we no longer manufacture the Blackwing Pencil. We do, however, manufacture the Prismacolor Turquoise Drawing Pencil that has many of the characteristics of the Blackwing Pencil." "Many" - das klingt vage. Konkreter sind andere Aussagen, wo von einer <a href="http://kennethhunt.com/archives/000511.html">"very similar" lead </a>gesprochen wird oder gar von der <a href="http://potulentpalaver.blogspot.com/2006/12/owen-fitzgerald.html">same graphite formula</a>.

Stephen: I think that the Cal Cedar "Blackwing" will be a very successful pencil. I do not think that it will be a mere nostalgic "retro" product but a well-made, functioning tool, filling the void for artists and writers left by the 602 that no other pencil has quite been able to fill. While many just collect the Blackwing, others actually use it for their creative work and may not be able to afford the absurd prices now seen on ebay. Working artists and writers are the people who will buy this pencil. My sense is that it will not be an exact replica of the 602 but a new, modern pencil with some of the Blackwing's best characteristics---smoothness, darkness, speed, and of course the great eraser and ferrule.(I have no inside info at all, but I do respect Mr. Berolsheimer at CalCedar and feel certain that he will produce a quality product. The Palomino, after all, is one of the best pencils available today.) I for one am looking forward to this CalCedar pencil with enormous anticipation and hope. I have a feeling that it will become my daily pencil of choice.

Stephen: Thank you for your comment and your kind words! You're right – such a comparison would most likely turn out unfavourable for a reborn Blackwing. Besides that, if Pentel reduce their range of wooden pencils considerably – as happened recently – I doubt that a pencil targeted at a minority (albeit an enthusiastic one) would survive.

Re your last sentence: I beg to differ ;-) Don't hide your light under a bushel – you have proven numerous times that you are an expert.
