Heute habe ich von Craft Design Technology erfahren, dass die Produktion des item 17 nicht eingestellt wurde. Dieser Bleistift (übrigens das erste Produkt des CDT-Sortiments) wird noch produziert, ist aber schwer zu bekommen; der einzige mir zurzeit bekannte Anbieter ist Vetted in den USA. – Mehr zum item 17 gibt es unter "Craft Design Technology pencil" (pencil talk) und "Consumption Item 14: Craft Design Technology Item 17" (Reciprocal Crap Exchange).

Die äußeren Unterschiede zum Pentel Black Polymer 999: Glatter statt mattem Lack, Endkappe aus Kunststoff (wie z. B. beim Mitsubishi Hi-uni oder dem Tombow Mono 100), andere Gestaltung der Härtegradkennzeichnung, Aufdruck „supreme quality for drawing lines of high density” statt „the highest quality for general use”, Artikelnummer CB200 statt CB100 und weder EAN noch Strichcode.

Die Form des JIS-Zeichens (Japan Industrial Standards) auf dem Stift durfte nur bis zum 30.9.2008 benutzt werden. – Mehr zu diesem Bleistift hat pencil talk unter „Pentel Black Polymer 999α (999 alpha) pencil”.

Danke für dieses Detail. Meine Information von Staedtler aus dem vergangenen Jahr ist zwar eine andere, aber mal abgesehen davon, dass die Rezepturen und die Quellen für Rohstoffe auch wechseln können, ist Ihre Information plausibler. Der Preisunterschied wäre anders wirklich nicht mehr nachvollziehbar, zumal auch die Lackierung des Lumograph ebenso aufwändig ist wie die des Noris (da also wohl kaum viel gespart werden kann). Ich denke jedoch, dass es auch beim Zedernholz Qualitäts- und damit Preisunterschiede gibt und für den Noris das günstigere – und vielleicht bald wieder Jelutong – zum Einsatz kommt.

Nochmal zu Staedtler: Laut Auskunft von Staedtler (April 2008) haben nur der Lumograph und Stenofix die gleiche Mine, nicht jedoch der Noris 120 (und Tradition). Der Unterschied bestehe vor allem im feineren Malgrad für Ton und Graphit. - Die Preisdifferenz wäre sonst auch schwer zu rechtfertigen, gerade bei der Verwendung von Zedernholz für den Noris.

You’re right, the quality of the finish does not match the one of the rest of the pencil, and I wonder why Pentel have chosen it, especially in view of the fact that their other woodcase pencils have a better finish. – The Mono 100 and the Hi-uni are excellent. I like to use them too, also the uni Penmanship pencil. The latter isn’t very suitable for prolonged writing but definitely a very special pencil. By the way, its lead differs from the Hi-uni 4B so I assume that it has a different composition or gets a special treatment. – The Lumograph is a classic, and I enjoy it for that reason too (I even have two very old Lumograph 2886’s with a different design; I will show them at some time).

I was happy to share my choices and hope that other bloggers will be encouraged to do the same!

I picked up some more BP999s in B and some in 2B, and they grow on me, despite the slightly disappointing finish. I love the box, and I wish the pencils had finishes that could match, but I’m liking them more and more despite that.

I could probably live with just Mono 100s, so I have a bunch of them. I also have Uni Penmanship 4Bs that are really wonderful if a light touch can be used, and the CDTs and Hi-Unis are very nice as well. The Lumographs are easy to get, affordable, and write quite well too. If I had to choose among all them a top two though, I’d probably go with BP999 B and Mono 100 HB.

Thanks for sharing your choices, Gunther! I was wondering when some of the bloggers would do this.

Stationery Traffic: It’s a shame but I still haven’t tried the Faber-Castell 9008 Steno in B or 2B so I can’t comment on them. As far as I know these are the only ones of their kind; I hope they aren’t endangered species too. – Yes, the Craft Design Technology item 17 has been discontinued too; if you can’t find remaining stock just let me know.

Julie Paradise: Mechanical pencils have their merits, and I use them too (e. g. in meeting where using a Carl Decade DE-100 desktop sharpener would be inappropriate). – It’s good to know where the Conté/BIC pencils can be bought! :-)

deh: Der Tombow Mono 100 ist jetzt übrigens auch bei Peter Hämpel erhältlich (wenn auch für 1,90 pro Stück, aber immerhin).

Frank: Die Tagesverfassung und das Beschreibmaterial spielen natürlich eine wichtige Rolle. – Die Bleistifte von STAEDTLER haben ja die gleichen Minen, unterscheiden sich also nur im Holz und der Lackierung. Bis vor kurzem gab es den Noris 120 in Jelutong, doch meine letzten sind in Zeder; damit hätte dieser Bleistift erst recht ein unschlagbares Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. – Ich freue mich, mit meiner hartnäckigen Kugelschreiber-Abneigung nicht allein zu sein!

Sebastian: Der Hi-uni ist ebenfalls ein hervorragender Bleistift und gehört sicher in die Top Ten der meisten Graphit-Liebhaber. – Soweit ich weiß, fiel der Pentel Mark Sheet ebenfalls der Verkleinerung des Sortiments zum Opfer.

Matthias: Die Härte F ist eine sehr praktische, z. B. dann, wenn das Papier als einzelnes Blatt auf dem Tisch liegt (in solchen Fällen schätze ich auch den Pentel Black Polymer 999 in H). – Interessant, was Du zum WOPEX sagst! Das ist ja dann eine weitere besondere Eigenschaft dieses speziellen Bleistifts.

Matthew B: As far as I know the lead in the Craft Design Technology item 17 is at least very similar (if not identical) to the one in the Black Polymer 999 HB. – Both the design and the finish of the item 17 is amazing – it is minimalistic and of very high quality (I wonder which technology has been employed for the lettering; it is different from the unsual foil printing and immune to abrasion).

I’m a big fan of the Craft Design Technology pencil. Looks beautiful and writes amazingly. They are made by Pentel so I imagine they’re similar to the black polymer 999 (which I would love to try)
