  1. Unfortunately I don’t have a date but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were from the 1930’s, i.e. the first version with the black and yellow stripes (or at least in the same design and younger). I’ll try to find out more and post it here.

  4. Thank you! It’s also the first Noris with the moon (strictly speaking a quarter moon) I came across. – As far as I know the moon was used well into the 1960’s, and I wouldn’t mind meeting him on an anniversary pencil ;-)

  6. I forgot to mention the deep hue of the cedar. Maybe these are old enough to be red cedar instead of incense cedar?

I have a few old Castell 9000s that I sharpen and they have a similarly dark tone.

  7. Sean, I am not sure if the photos show the hue correctly – when comparing the pencils to the photos I have the impressing that the latter are a little too dark. However, the wood is definitely different from the cedar used today so you might be right.

John, no problem with the self-link :-) I know that posting and have two of the 9000s shown as a gift from Michael. If I am not mistaken I have another old 9000 which could be made from red cedar.

  9. Up until a couple months back, I thought that the yellow pencil with an eraser plug (think Ticonderoga or Mirado) was a universally-recognised icon that everyone was familiar with. Then, I found out about the Noris, its history and ubiquity all over Europe and my life was changed forever!

I’ve never even seen a Noris in the flesh but in the past few days I’ve been hopelessly falling in love with it. I can’t have enough of its beautiful color combination. That gorgeous red dipped-end would have spared many kids from suffering teeth damage by inspiring them instead of enthusing them to bite! ;)

Which brings me to a boom I just ordered that prominently features the Noris pencil: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1786270838/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

    Have you seen it?

  10. I’m happy to hear that the Noris has changed your life! ;-) By the way, the colours yellow, black, white and red refer to Nürnberg’s coat of arms. – I hope you will enjoy the book “The Secret Life of the Pencil”! So far I have seen it online only. I was promised a review copy by the authors but haven’t received it yet.
