  1. I read in Petroski’s book that one of the conditions (cheap) imported pencils suffered in the U.S. was that the country of origin not only needed to be printed on the barrel (to indicate they weren’t made in the U.S.), but also more toward the center. This was because some of those buying imported pencils were concealing that fact by sharpening them past the point where the country’s name was imprinted on the barrel (they were often found right at the end of the pencil). Importers and re-sellers were bypassing certain taxes and tariffs.

Looking at this pencil, I wonder if the placement of that text – regarding the source of the lead – was placed in the center in an attempt to guarantee the message wouldn’t or couldn’t be altered, or otherwise removed. Not that it has anything to do with the scenario I mentioned above — it’s just the text seems conspicuously centered.

Congrats! I’ve been looking for examples of these pencils for some years now.

  2. Michael Leddy: Thank you again :-)

Sean: Thank you for mentioning that detail – I haven’t remembered that from Petroski’s book. You’re right: the position of that additional print is unusual. I will try to get more information from Faber-Castell Germany.
