Caran d’Ache 348

Neu von Caran d’Ache1: Der Bleistift 348 mit einem Schaft aus Schweizer Buchenholz.

Caran d'Ache 348

  3. A really interesting new pencil. Thank you for the excellent photos. I also learned about „Maggi“. Did you have an earlier version of the post without the explanatory link? :-)

The desire to create an all-Swiss pencil is commendable. I wonder if the slats were also processed in Switzerland?

  4. Stephen, thank you for your kind words. Yes, there was an earlier version until it has occurred to me that „Maggi“ may need an explanation ;-) It is definitely an odd smell for a pencil, and I wonder where it comes from. I feel tempted to ask Caran d’Ache …

Regarding the all-Swiss pencil: If the wood is from Switzerland I assume the slats were also produced there. – I wonder where the graphite is from. Do you know of any graphite mines in Switzerland?

  6. No, I am not aware of any Swiss graphite mines. I wonder what Conrad Gessner’s source of graphite would have been? Was Borrowdale still the only known source in 1567?

I found a very interesting article here (in French). It seems Caran d’Ache has been investigating alternate wood species for decades, and this „Swiss Wood“ pencil is meant to create differention from Staedtler and Faber-Castell products.

  7. I have been looking for this pencil for quite a while. No response from Caran d’Ache even after I email to them.
May I know where to purchase it?

  8. Stephen: Findings have shown that even the Celts had access to graphite and used it for watertight, high-temperature pottery, and mediaeval documents prove that farmers around Passau have pursued opencast mining in the 13th century (source: Helm, Winfried; Ortmeier, Martin (Hg.): »Millionenbauern« Bäuerlicher Graphitbergbau im Bayerischen Wald. Freilichtmuseum Finsterau, 2. Aufl. 2011). – Thank you for the link to the article about Caran d’Ache – it even shows the 348! (I can’t read French so I will have to used a translating service.) The differentiation is quite clever and sounds promising, all the more in combination with their excellent design.

T Square: I am sorry to hear that Caran d’Ache didn’t reply. – I got the pencil as a sample from Format, a specialist shop in Darmstadt, Germany.

  9. You’re welcome, Stephen! I forgot to mention that, according to the cited book, the evidence for graphite pottery goes back as far as 3000 BC. Of course this does not prove the use of graphite for marking or writing purposes back then but these findings suggest that there were more mines besides the one in Borrowdale at that time (and earlier). – You can find some more details about graphite pottery at „Toller Tiegel“.

  10. Hello, Thanks for the reply. I have been trying to find it online without any luck. Not sure do you have any recommendation?

  11. Wowter, thank you for the link! It’s good to know that there is at least one online retailer who stocks the 348. Indeed, it’s quite expensive, but the 348 is such a beautiful pencil that every pencil afficionado should consider getting at least two – one to use and one to keep ;-) So far I haven’t found another source but I will keep at it. – Yes, „locally sourced and produced“ is really agreeable.

Klasse!

  14. Wow, that is a gorgeous pencil. I love that deep woodgrain. And I really need to find myself one of those Janus sharpeners. I just love that long, sharp, concave point!

    Thanks for the post!

  15. It’s indeed a marvellous pencil, and it’s a pleasure to use it. – If you are looking for a Janus: Make sure to get one with a working blade. Sharpening a dull one is very difficult and most likely won’t yield the result of a new one.

  17. Hi Lexikaliker,

Just to let you know that I enjoy your blog immensely (even with the constant help of a German dictionary) and have managed to order some of these 348 pencils. Thanks! I always look forward to new articles from you :)

  18. The smell might be caused by the high temperature treatment. There are several procedures to alter the characteristics of wood (different alignment of cellulose molecules makes them less interesting for insects and fungi, more like a hardwood and darker (caramel). It could be the beech wood was processed to make the material even stiffer. A technique that is used here in The Netherlands to improve the wood material of some wood species is the Plato method. See for Plato process description: http://www.platowood.nl/69/The-Plato-Technology.html .

  19. Wowter, thank you for your comment and the link to the Plato treatment! I will look closer at it soon.

You are right – recently a wood expert told me that the smell is most likely caused by the heat treatment. At Caran d’Ache the beech wood is heated to 150–200 °C to suppress microbiological attack (see this article), and at this temperature the lignin is released from the wood fibre. The smell of the lignin in released form (i.e. pure), the expert said, is identical to the smell of the 348 so I would say that the smell is not typical for the Jura beech but rather for its processing.

  23. First time I heard about Caran d’Ache was some 18 years ago when I was given a Natura-like pencil as a gift form none other than Apple Computer. Back then I was a digital guy, so instead of using it regularly, I dumped it into a pen case where it stood until about two years ago when I began re-appreciating writing instruments once again.

I only kept the pencil because I loved its natural wood finish and Apple’s restrained branding on it (a tiny white apple logo) but not because writing with it was something out of the ordinary.

It’s ironic then, that the pencil responsible from bringing me back into pencildom was to be another Caran d’Ache product, the 348.

I ordered a couple of these out of curiosity and to see what one of the world’s most expensive pencils was all about. Up to that point, pencils were just pencils for me. The minute I held one and started writing with it, the minute I was blown away by its sheer smoothness, it’s perfect girth and weight, and that bloody red cap with cute little cross to match. All reviews I had read up to that point -mostly from American fellows- were a „love it or hate it“ kind of affair. Wonder why I missed reading about this pencil here, that would have speed my conversion to the Grant World Order of the Graphite!

As a side note, the old Caran pencil is not anywhere near this smooth. Could it be that present day Naturas are like the old one or has Caran stepped-up their game?

BTW Derwent’s aluminum holder for oversize pencils (silver one) fits this pencil, the only issue is that it is sure to bruise a bit that beautiful dipped-end.

  24. Thank you for sharing this exciting story!

So far I haven’t tried a Natura so I can’t say anything about its lead.

Thank you also for letting us know that the Derwent holder for oversize pencil fits the 348!
