A.W. Faber „Polygrades” Jubiläums-Edition

Zum 200. Geburtstag Lothar von Fabers am 12. Juni 2017 hat Faber-Castell eine auf 15.000 Exemplare limitierte Edition der „Polygrade“-Bleistifte von A.W. Faber herausgegeben1.

A.W. Faber „Polygrades” Jubiläums-Edition

  5. Auf der Rückseite heißt es:
    Limited Edition 2017
In Honour of Lothar von Faber’s 200th Birthday
    Faber-Castell AG ⋅ 90546 Stein ⋅ Germany

  1. I’d love to try these, but unfortunately the german website doesn’t deliver to Frogland…and the French site doesn’t have these for sale :(

  2. I’m happy to hear that you are interested in this set too. If I can order one for you in Germany and forward it to France just let me know!

  3. It would be with great pleasure :)
I intended this set as a gift to a friend of mine who is a real fan of Faber Castell brand.

  4. Thanks :)
Will you try the pencils in your kit? I wonder if they are using the same leads as the Castell 9000, or some older formula with less oil/wax, to make them more „historically correct“.

  5. No, I won’t try these pencils (at least not for the time being). – I think that the leads are the same as in the 9000 because specially produced leads for these pencils would have made the set considerably more expensive.

  6. Sorry, didn’t want to offend you. You answered so fast to the first emails, I wondered if you got the last one, since sometimes when I answer from my tablet emails are not actually sent.
I’m absolutely not in a hurry about anything, no pressure at all from my side :)
    Have a nice day :)

  8. What a beautiful set! If I were you, I would also hesitate to use these right away. Thank you for sharing all the details! (I just noticed how they printed the hardness on the box itself next to the pencils. A very neat detail ^_^)

  9. Yes, the hardness on the box is a nice detail! They have done the same on the original wooden box, by the way. – Yes, it is too beautiful to be used but luckily I got a second box as a gift so I can try these pencils someday.

  10. This is a truly awesome set. The attention to detail and design aesthetic is in a league of its own. I honestly thought this to be a vintage item in pristine condition until I managed to translate the content!

Do you know if they happen to still be available?

BTW You’re a wonderful photographer, truly enjoy the lighting and composition skills shown in your very image. Bravo!

  11. Guillermo de la Maza: It is still available but I don’t know if it is offered outside Gemany too.

Matt: Thank you for that detail! (If I am not mistaken you are referring to France.)

  12. Yes, France. Land of wine, frogs, and stinky cheese :)

I didn’t found the Polygrade kit on the F-C US website, but this pack is equally interesting

Very honestly, after having sharpened the Polygrade pencils, I’m a bit disappointed. They are beautiful and well finished (except the dipped ends, which I always miss), but too « modern » : skinny, skinny! And the matte paint doesn’t help. Plus not all of them are cedar, argh!
It is fore sure nice to see a reproduction of such an historical product from F-C, and I salute them for issuing this set, although I was hoping for something even more high end. But perhaps it’s just true to the original, I don’t know.

  13. Thank you for the clarification! ;-)

I’m sorry to hear about your disappointment. Regarding the dippend end: The old ones didn’t have theim either. And yes, they are skinny but I don’t know the diameter of the old ones. What makes you think that not all are made from cedar? I can’t imagine that Faber-Castell has used different kinds of wood for this set (and they have told me that this set is made from cedar). And yes, if one thinks of the GvFC line of products it is understandable to expect this anniversary set to be a little more “high-end”, as you describe it. However, maybe they have thought about that and came to the conclusion that it won’t sell well for the resulting price (and most likely a considerable number of these sets is handed out as a gift or a promotional item).

    The 9000 set looks nice!

  14. Oh, simply the smell, and aspect of the wood. The H, 3B, 4B and 5B appear all cedar. 2B and H appear half cedar, half something else (basswood) (color, aspect and smell difference).
Others are just some pretty odorless wood, like some of the 9000 I have (I remember seing some cedar 9000 too). But maybe I’m wrong, and it’s just two different types of cedar?

Actually, after having watched video of the fabrication process, I can imagine F-C using different woods ; they seem to receive packages of pre-processed wood, and use it pack after pack, without making any real difference, hence some cedar 9000, and some basswood (?) 9000. Could very well be the same for this set, even if cedar is used in majority. However, there is no mix between the pitted wood used in cheaper products, and the non pitted wood used in the 9000 line.

Colored pencil like Polychromos and Albrecht Dürer seem to be cedar, but they are thicker. Just like the GvFC, which certainly enjoy more expensive wood processing.

All in all, I’m still happy with this set, I just shouldn’t have sharpened it^^

  15. Matt, thank you for these details. If Faber-Castell has really mixed the woods for this set and the 9000 – which I can’t imagine – I would consider this a serious quality issue. I rather think that there are different batches of cedar so the grain and the colour varies between the halves and the pencils.

  17. Late to this party, but I managed to get a package of these via CW Pencils. So far, I’ve not sharpened any of them, thou the tentation is high, but I really wanted to know if you finally decided to try the extra set you got. Did you?

Anything you could say about these pencils? Are they 9000 leads encased in different bodies?

Even if the case is just cardboard, it looks pretty elegant and well designed to me. Would love to get my hands on any of those vintage sets of last century, thou.

  18. Ernst: Danke für dieses Detail!

Guillermo de la Maza: No, I haven’t sharpened the extra set yet but Faber-Castell has confirmed that the leads are the same as in their 9000 pencils. – The vintage sets are great!

  19. Hallo
