Den japa­ni­schen Bleistift-Klassiker Tom­bow 8900, der die­ses Jahr sein 70-jähriges Jubi­läum fei­ert, gab es auch mal in einer sehr klei­nen Ausführung.

Groß und klein

Wäh­rend der große 8900 die übli­chen Maße hat, ist der kleine gerade ein­mal 9,5 cm lang und 6,5 mm dick; beide haben eine 2 mm starke Mine. Wann und zu wel­chem Anlass es den Mini-8900 gab, weiß ich lei­der nicht. – Der große 8900 und die Falt­schach­tel tra­gen noch das alte JIS1-Logo, das bis August 2008 genutzt wurde.

    Very nice this deco­ra­tion of a dra­gon­fly (Libelle) on the box. Is there a reason for the use of this pre­da­tory insect by Tombow?

    It’s indeed a nice deco­ra­tion! At “Story of the Tom­bow Logo” it reads:

    Tom­bow (tonbo) means “dra­gon­fly” in Japa­nese and was often refer­red to as akizu/akitsu in anci­ent times. Since Japan was cal­led Akitsu shima (dra­gon­fly island in Eng­lish) in the past, the name of the com­pany also repres­ents our desire to repre­sent Japan’s sta­tio­nery indus­try. The dra­gon­fly is also refer­red to as kachi mushi (vic­to­rious insect in Eng­lish) and is con­side­red to bring good luck.
