Während die Schreibwaren-Welt den 120. Geburtstag der Marke Noris feiert, fanden vor einigen Tagen nahezu unbemerkt zwei andere Jubiläen statt: Die Marken Atlas und Minerva wurden 125 Jahre alt.
Atlas und Minerva, beide eingetragen am 9. Januar 1896, sind die ältesten und noch geschützten Marken von STAEDTLER1. Älter ist nur der Elefant, denn er betrat bereits am 6. Mai 1895 die Markenbühne; sein Schutz besteht jedoch seit 1994 nicht mehr2.
Die Bleistifte im Foto sind gut zehn Jahre alt. Den runden Atlas 151 gab es damals nur in HB, doch der sechsflächige Minerva war in H, HB und B erhältlich. Heute bekommt man den Atlas nicht mehr (auch der Markenname wird nicht mehr verwendet) und den minerva 130 60, wie er korrekt heißt, nur noch in HB. – Details zu diesen Bleistiften gibt es unter „Staedtler’s oldest brands – the Atlas and Minerva pencils“ bei pencil talk.
In diesem Jahr finden übrigens weitere – wenn auch nicht ganz so runde – Markenjubiläen statt, nämlich die von Mars (120, 29. April), Lumograph (90, 25. Juni) und Tradition (90, 14. Oktober).

Thank you for this interesting post. If you look for Atlas pencils using search engines you will notice there are quite a few other makes by this name. I noticed a British firm active in the 1940s. Also Adel from Turkey had pencils named Atlas. And I spotted (colour) pencils on a Sri Lankan website with Atlas in another logo. It seems the name has bewildered many companies. I can imagine why: It has great origine.

Thank you for that post! I happened to have found a blue Minerva 2B with the same reference 130 60, no barcode…I wonder how old it could be.
Also on the topic of red Staedtler pencils, the jumbo Staedtler Maxi 116 40 is (was ?) also very decent. But no trademark to discuss there!
A blue Minerva 130 60 without barcode? This is very nice! Do you know where this pencil was made? Since the barcode on many STAEDTLER pencils was introduced in 1990 it could be 30 years old.
I don’t know the Maxi 116 40, and STAEDTLER Germany doesn’t list it. Have you bought it recently?
It’s written „Germany“ and the wood is cedar, that certainly dates it from many years ago ;)

I unfortunately don’t have Maxi anymore, but I got some in a package from an English retired art teacher many years ago. Again, no barcodes so it could be old…

Many pencils were only produced for a short time and only offered locally; maybe this was also the case with the Maxi.
