  1. The animal on the pencil is definitely a salamander. It has the silhouette and characteristic body expression of the fire salamander (with the one of easiest of all latin names: Salamandra salamandra: the first latin name of an animal I taught my children). There have been many fascinating stories about these animals often associated with fire: As if the fire created them (they often hide in wood). As they are quite common in Switzerland (I have seen them several times on holidays) maybe Caran d’Ache would like to refer to this folklore. See more on these in German: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Feuersalamander or in English: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fire_salamander. For only this logo I would have purchased one. Fire salamanders are so beautiful with their yellow and black. Great story! Similar to this one: A German firm used old wood from Venetian gondola for its knife handles. See: http://www.guede-solingen.de/de/sonder-editionen/briccole-di-venezia.

  2. Thank you for these interesting details, Wowter! Yes, there may be a connection to the Swiss folklore; I have also asked Caran d’Ache about it. – The knife handles look real nice!

[Comment edited on Oct. 17th: Silly conjecture deleted.]

  3. They are ’slightly‘ different: Salamanders are amphibians and lizards (Eidechsen) are reptiles. However, in shape they very much look alike. But it could be in local German words they use or mix up the different species. And true: The fire salamander is the most lizard-like amphibian.

  4. Wowter, thank you for the clarification! My knowledge of the animal world is very limited, especially when it comes to amphibians and reptiles.

Today the reply from Caran d’Ache came in. They have confirmed that the pencil has been produced about ten years ago and is no longer available. In addition to this they have told me that the salamanders symbolize the Swiss alpine world.

  5. Thank you for featuring this rare item!

The reuse of old wood to make pencils is intriguing to learn about. I wonder if the experiment was not deemed successful, as I’ve not heard of any similar product.

  6. It was a pleasure to show it!

I think it is expensive to adapt the production process to the wood’s properties, especially in view of the small batches. Besides that it could be possible that the variations of quality are much bigger with old wood than with new one (which is grown under controlled circumstances), resulting in a higher rate of rejects. Maybe the recipes of the lacquers and the glues must be modified too.

If my memory doesn’t deceive me there is a pencil manufacturer in the US who has started his business with Cedar from old sleepers and fence posts; however, I don’t remember the name.

  7. Regarding the reclaimed wood from fence posts – I had heard and forgotten this story: Musgrave did that for many years, offering farmers the replacement of wooden fences with wire fences in exchange for taking the used lumber.
