  1. Thanks for showing these, Gunther. The Pedigree was everywhere when I was a boy. I remember that writing with it was really unpleasant — the sharp edge pushed into my writer’s bump. Mongols were much more to my taste.

I have one Pedigree, with the same eraser and ferrule, but with different lettering. I’m not sure how I acquired it. I’ll make a post with it soon.

  2. Thanks for this post. If I’m not mistaken, the designer may have employed that old technique of using angles to direct your eye across the page in a certain manner, i.e. the orientation of each pencil leads in a connected way to key points in the advertisement.

    For example: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:The_Nightwatch_by_Rembrandt.jpg

The flagpole and rifles on the left draw the eye toward the center. The rifle of the fellow behind the man in yellow, and the pike in back, direct your eye toward the right.

Michael, thank you for sharing your memories. I am looking forward to reading your post about the Pedigree!

Sean: That’s an intriguing observation! The designer was most likely aware of that technique so I am sure that you’re right (of course in „The Nightwatch“ the light is important too).
